I love the idea of resume virtues vs eulogy virtues. Joseph soloveitchik has called these selves adam i and adam ii brooks asks. But our culture and our educational systems spend more time teaching the skills and strategies you need for career. We all know that the eulogy virtues are more important than the résumé ones. I think eulogy virtues are what maya angelou is referring to by how you make people feel. The self who craves success who builds a résumé and the self who seeks connection community love the values that make for a great eulogy.
Can we balance these two selves. As brooks says resume virtues are about career success and eulogy virtues are about your inner light and inner character including qualities like kindness honesty with self and with others maturity and capacity to love. The moral bucket list developed the concept that there are two sets of virtues the résumé virtues and the eulogy virtues. How different would we live our lives if instead of handing out resumes we handed out eulogies.
